Crossfit Home Gym – The Build Week 2
Well this last weekend I did some serious moving. I moved the baby room to the old workout room, moved the office to the old babies room and moved the home gym to the old office, if that makes sense. It was quite a mess as you can tell from the photos. I promise my stuff is not usually that un-organized.
Since the room for the new office was much smaller than the old one, I had to downsize. Thus began my mass cleanup effort, which also included making room in the garage and old office for the future gym. To make room, I new I had to get rid of a lot of things that had been sitting there collecting dust. On Friday night I began moving the rooms. Along the way I began making a pile of stuff I thought I could live without. When I was done moving the essentials I was shocked to see my “Stuff” pile had grown to monumental proportions, I realized I had collected more crap than I could have ever imagined. Next I began organizing the new office and babies’ room. I could live without a gym for a few days, heck I didn’t even have the equipment yet, but we couldn’t live without those two rooms.
After the rooms were complete I began separating the large pile into two sections. Basically stuff I could sell and stuff I would trash. After I made the divisions I took a deep breath, made several trips to the dump, and got rid of stuff I still wanted but honestly didn’t need. After day two I was left with a small pile of items I could sell. I then began listing the items on Ebay. It was a very busy weekend, but I got so much accomplished! And I’m that much closer to having a new gym.
For those who are thinking about building your own gym I’ve compiled five steps that got me through the “Dispensing with junk phase” of the build.
1) Clear the space where you want to build your gym.
2) Move all your must have items to the rooms where they belong and if need be, begin organizing and getting those rooms ready for use.
3) Next take all the stuff you could live without to a central “I might or might not get rid of pile”. A quick way to decide what you should keep or get rid of is to apply this rule: If you haven’t used it in over a year get rid of it, its just taking up valuable space and collecting dust.
4) Start separating the trash from the stuff you can sell. At this point you might break down and begin to move stuff back into your must have category but stay strong! You really don’t need it if it’s been sitting there that long. Remember, unless you have a warehouse, you’ll eventually have to get rid of it anyway, to make room for things you might actually use.
5) Once you’ve separated the trash from stuff you will sell, take it to the dump and toss it. Yep I know it hurts but I promise you’ll feel invigorated when you see your less cluttered space and begin imagining where your new gym will be.
6) Get the left over items ready to sell. You could have a garage sale but you’ll only make twenty-five cents here and there. I recommend using Ebay, sure it’s a bit more work but you’ll typically make way more selling your stuff online that in a garage sale. Since I need the cash to fund new Crossfit equipment, I chose the Ebay route. With any luck you’ll make a few bucks and more importantly you’ll free up the last bit of space for your new gym. It might take a couple of weeks to sell and ship your items but it will be well worth the wait.
One quick tip! Don’t just throw stuff out because you think it won’t sell. You’d be surprised what people will buy on Ebay. First search Ebay and see if people are selling the same type stuff you were ready to throw out, if they are, begin listing. Even if you only make a few bucks, it’s better than nothing. Remember “One mans trash is another mans treasure”.
